Tina Turner Tribute: A Celebration of Resilience and Rock 'n' Roll Legacy at the 2024 Grammy Awards

Oprah Winfrey inaugurated the Grammy homage to the esteemed Tina Turner, who passed away in May 2023, imparting a valuable lesson she once received from the legendary singer-songwriter herself. "She used to advise me, 'Oprah, you should dress up for dinner, even if no one else is there. Just so you feel beautiful to you. For yourself.'"

Following several poignant Grammy in-memoriam segments, including Stevie Wonder's rendition of Tony Bennett's songs and Jon Batiste leading a moving performance of “Lean on Me,” Winfrey graced the stage, standing before a radiant image of Turner.

"Tina Turner was always an imposing figure," Winfrey proclaimed, as a guitarist commenced playing the iconic guitar riff of “Proud Mary” in the background. "She is our eternal rock & roll goddess, who inspired millions, a poignant symbol of elegance and determination, soul and strength. Our affection and admiration for Tina grew as we witnessed her fearlessly reclaim her liberty. From the moment I encountered Tina, initially as a fan, and later privileged to be her friend, she epitomized a unique kind of role model... And as time's wheels keep turning, Tina's voice continues to resonate with all of us."

She then introduced the star of "The Color Purple" and vocalist Fantasia Barrino, a woman possessing her own "empowering voice," accompanied by Adam Blackstone and a troupe of backup dancers.

Adorned in shimmering gold sequins from head to toe, Barrino commanded attention, declaring, "Grammys, rise to your feet, you know what time it is."

"Y’all might not be familiar with me," the former Grammy winner continued. "So now, let me introduce myself." Suddenly, the band paused, and Barrino belted out the initial lyrics of Turner’s cherished "Proud Mary" solo, with no musical accompaniment. Gradually, more dancers joined Barrino onstage, and the band surged into a jubilant Turner-inspired dance-off.

Barrino then ventured into the audience, seeking a "lovely lady" who "doesn’t mind grooving." Pausing momentarily, she danced with Grammy nominee Dua Lipa and alongside Beyonce, sporting a cowboy hat, who stood and applauded beside Jay-Z.

She concluded the evening with a powerful rendition, exclaiming, "Tina, we adore you," echoing through the rafters, eliciting thunderous applause from the audience.
